GNRA/Crown Mining/Queensway & Industrial & Safety Supplies Nationals
By Franklin Wilson
The heavens above had the final say on day-two of the three-day Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA), Crown Mining/Queensway and Industrial and Safety Supplies National 2013/2014 Championships being contested at the Timehri Rifle Ranges.
Three ranges were scheduled to be contested yesterday – 500, 600, 900 – but after the X-Class shooters, the premier shots in the nation – shooting as the first detail at 600 yards were done, the rains intensified which resulted in the O-Class shooters being unable to shoot.
Rain actually halted competition at the 600 range after the first shot was taken by National Captain Mahendra Persaud. Following the short break, the X-Class shooters returned and were allowed to finish but that was as far as they were allowed on an overcast day where the shooters experienced subtle changing winds.
After five (5) ranges which includes the three on day-one, last Saturday, defending champion Ransford Goodluck holds a one point lead, he led by a single V-Bull after the first day.
He has 201 points and 20 V’s closely followed National Vice Captain Dylan Fields 200 points and 13V’s.
Caribbean Champion Lennox Braithwaite is next on 198 points and 20 V’s with National Captain Mahendra Persaud on 197 points and 15 V’s.
The competition has been very intense and close so far and like the first day when Goodluck (300 and 500) and Persaud (300) shot possibles it got even better yesterday with all four X-Class shooters recording possibles, Braithwaite and Fields at the 500 yards range; Braithwaite, Goodluck and Persaud at the 600 yards range.
Braithwaite and Fields shooting as a pair on the first detail at 500 yards, both shot possibles of 35 points with seven and three V’s respectively Goodluck dropped one point with six V’s, while Persaud fell two points short with four V’s, underscoring the intense nature of the competition.
At 600 yards, Goodluck, Braithwaite and Persaud were red hot hitting the target with precision as they shot possibles of 35, each hitting the VBulls on three occasions. Fields was off by two points with two V’s.
The O-Class contest is also enticingly poised with Lt. Col. Terrance Stuart ahead after three Ranges having won at the 300 yards range, recording 34 points and 5V’s for 160 points and 13 V’s.
Inspector Dane Blair despite finishing third at 300 (32-1) is second overall, four points off Stuart with 4 V’s. Debutant Sherwin Felicien was second at 300 with 33 points and a single V and overall is third with 150 points and 4 V’s.
Bringing up the rear is Everall Nelson who achieved 31 points and 2 V’s yesterday for an overall total so far of 126 points and 2 V’s.
All the X and O Class shooters are shooting together so that everyone will enjoy the same conditions, according to National Captain Persaud.
Today’s final day will see the O-Class shooters completing their 600 yard shoot of seven rounds after which all the riflemen will shoot at the three 10-round shoots at 300, 600 and 1000yards ranges. They will also shoot two at 700 which should have been shot yesterday.
An enthralling day of shooting is anticipated.
