Two days of rigorous training in the intricacies of football came to a satisfying climax when the curtains came down on a workshop for more than 40 Physical Education Teachers from schools around the country, hosted by the principals of the K&S Entertainment Group, in preparation of the schools’ football tournament slated for
December 8-January 1 next.
The function was held at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports ground, Carifesta Avenue and the teachers enjoyed expert input from several facilitators including Trinidadian Coach, also a former coach of the Golden Jaguars, Jamal Shabazz, GFF Vice President, Ivan Persaud, National Football coach, Wayne Dover and Physiotherapist, Debita Harripersaud.
Mr. Shabazz hailed the initiative as highly successful during a brief press conference following the culmination of the course. He congratulated the coaches for the two days of hard work and urged them to unite towards the development of the sport.
“This is not about partisan politics or biasness; this is about the future of our footballers,” exhorted Mr. Shabazz. He further congratulated the principals of the K&S organisation for braving the vicissitudes and arranging the imminent tournament. “Now is the time to embrace, not segregate, not disseminate, not separate, not eliminate………,” the Trinidadian coach expounded. He then singled out one of Guyana’s football icons, Vibert Butts, a former representative of this country, and gifted him an authentic ‘Golden Jaguar’ jersey.
Mr. Shabazz was high in praise of several of the nation’s top ball weavers that have managed to segregate themselves from among their peers and go on to do yeoman service for the nation. However, he said that he was disappointed that these players were rebuffed at the recent ceremony that heralded the FIFA World Cup trophy into Guyana.
“Just imagine a top player like (Charles) ‘Lily’ Pollard debarred from entering the venue!,” a clearly riled up Shabazz expounded. He nevertheless feels that the lessons learned by the teachers, once shared, could be the catalyst in the elimination of such behaviours.
Vice President of the GFF, Ivan Persaud and national coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover also spoke highly of the venture and urged the participants to share their newly acquired knowledge. “The lessons imparted at this forum are very useful towards the development of the sport and I urge you to share your knowledge,” said Mr. Persaud. Mr. Dover concurred while voicing the hope that a fresh breed of players would emerge from the impending tournament to
facilitate continuity.
Participants utilized the two training days productively and were taught the necessary skills needed to impart knowledge to children. They were also tutored in the development of technical skills and issues relating to first aid among other techniques.
This important part of activities out of the way, the officials now await the kick off scheduled for December 8-January 1 next. Participating schools are drawn from Linden (4), West Bank Demerara (4), Georgetown (8), East Coast Demerara (4), East Bank Demerara (2), Mazaruni and Berbice (1 apiece).
