The seventh edition of Ministry of Health/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport/Guyana Cycling Federation ‘Ride for Life’ Five-Stage Cycle Road Race peddled off yesterday morning in Berbice and after two stages Raynauth Jeffrey, who won the Corentyne to New Amsterdam stage and finished sixth in the Rosignol to Carifesta stage is leading the overall leader after day one of the four-day event.
Of the 72 registered starters 62 commenced the first stage with 57 of them completing the distance in East Berbice. All 57 finished the second stage including the lone female rider, Naiomi Singh.
Eight riders from overseas entered the race with Bajan Darren Matthews winning the second stage in a time of Two Hours 21 Minutes 24 Seconds after Jeffery who is also riding for local Team Coco’s, copped the opening stage in a time of One Hour 37 Minutes 42 Seconds to give team Coco’s victories in both stages so far.
In East Berbice, Jeffery was followed by Orville Hinds of United Bike Shop, the experienced Godfrey Pollydore (Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club), Alanzo Greaves (Roraima Bikers Club), Darren Matthews and Geron Williams (Continental Cycle Club) in that order. Michael Anthony (Team Coco’s) was the first junior to cross the finish line in stage one.
In the West Berbice to Carifesta Avenue stage, Matthews led the pack and won comfortably as he easily outsprinted the leading bunch over the last 150 meters with Williams, Pollydore, Greaves, Paul DeNobrega and Jeffery following the Bajan across the finishing line in a ‘bunch time of Two Hours 21 Minutes 24 Seconds.
Mario King was the top junior on this second stage of the competition which was first held in 2007 when Greaves took the inaugural title.
Today, the action is expected to start at the Wales Police on the West Demerara from 09:00hrs for the third stage. The race proceeds to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo to end the 35 mile journey, which is the shortest distance of the five stages.
The overseas campaigners Matthew (Barbados), Scott Savory (USA), Andrew Newton (USA) Paul Choo-We-Naim (USA) Samuel Burke (USA) Gerad Yates (Canada) Jamie Ramiez Berral (Colombia) and Antiono Jose Alacon Gonsalez (Colombia) will be hoping to upset the Guyanese based riders as the action intensifies.
The fourth stage will be contested tomorrow in Essequibo, moving off at Supenaam from 07:30hrs and will go all the way to the other end, Charity, before returning to the village of Suddie for the conclusion.
This leg of the race covers 67 miles while the final leg on Sunday will wheel off in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden from Cara Cara to Homestretch Avenue in the capital city, a distance of 64.6 miles. (Sean Devers)
