– barmaid among five detained
The owner of one of the last remaining brothels in Georgetown was found bound, gagged and apparently strangled yesterday in one of the rooms of his South Road property.
Joseph ‘Joey’ Jagdeo, 62, was found at around 06:00 hrs, in Room 10 of the South Central Guest House, located at Lot 218 South Road, Georgetown.
His wife, Faiza Hack, said that his hands were bound with cloth, and a piece of cloth was also tied across his mouth. Blood was oozing from his nostrils.
Robbery is believed to be the motive and Kaieteur News was told that police have detained a barmaid at the guest house and four other persons.
Jagdeo reportedly only kept small sums of cash on the premises.
Reports indicate that the guest house owner was slain some time on Wednesday. One of the women who frequents the premises told Kaieteur News that she last saw Jagdeo alive at around 08:30 hrs on Wednesday when she went to the businessman’s office, since she owed him money. She said that he then went into the compound for a few minutes before going back inside.
Another woman said that she went to the guest house barmaid at around 10:00 hrs on Wednesday to rent room 10, which is the same room in which Jagdeo was subsequently found.
However, she said that the barmaid told her “don’t use room ten, use room fifteen.” The woman said that she was puzzled by the barmaid’s response, since she usually used room ten ‘for business.’ The woman said that while heading for her room, she observed that the room in which Jagdeo was found was shut.
The victim’s wife said that she received a call at around 06:30 hrs yesterday from one of the guest house employees who said that “they found Joey and he dead.”
Ms. Hack said that she then went to the guest house, but was not allowed into the room where the body was. However, when the corpse was removed, she observed that her husband was gagged and his hands bound. She believes that her spouse was killed and then placed on the bed.
Kaieteur News was told that Joseph Jagdeo had operated the South Central Guest house for over 20 years.
