Efforts by the Executive of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) to decentralize activities from the Capital city will hit new grounds when several of the country’s top boxers don gloves tonight in the National Champion of Champions tournament which concludes tomorrow night.
Activities will be staged at the Bartica Community Centre Ground under floodlights and in conjunction with Red Earth Promotions, a group out of the host community and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Already, the pugilists from Georgetown are confident of carting off the many ‘gold’ medals on offer but will have to be wary of their counterparts from the rural areas. Of more significance though, is the fact that the residents of that community would have been starved of such action since most of the previous cards were staged in Central Georgetown; Barticians will now have a first-hand look at some of the best talent around.
The Georgetown squad will be joined by their counterparts out of Berbice, Linden and Essequibo as well as two women, middleweights, Dwon Thompson (GDF) and Theresa London, to add flavor to the card.
The boxers and officials left Georgetown this morning and will be in action later this evening. Those boxers selected to represent Georgetown are Jnr./Flyweight, Tyronne Lashley (RHJ), Bantamweights, Mark Marshall (GDF), Stephon Nedd (REP), Lightweights Clairmonte Gibson (GDF), Stephon Gouveia (HE), Imran Khan (GPF), Jnr./Welterweight, Bert Braithwaite (GDF), and Welterweights, Ron Smith (GDF) and Eon Bancroft, Middleweights, Markember Pierre (GDF) and Dennis Thomas (Police) and Heavyweight, Jason Barker (Rep).
The weigh in and medical examination will be conducted this morning and tomorrow morning Mr. Poole had travelled to the mining town last week to ensure
that all systems are in place for this evening’s activities and had reported in the affirmative.
He envisages a full house and opined that this tournament may very well be the catalyst to many other such activities in those parts of the country. Organisers are also mulling similar cards in Essequibo in the near future.
