North New Amsterdam ‘A’ team recently won the New Amsterdam Town Week football competition which was completed recently under lights at the All Saints ground, New Amsterdam.
Six teams participated in the eight a side competition with the games being played for 20 minutes duration. The teams were – North New Amsterdam ‘A’ and ‘B’, South New Amsterdam, Central New Amsterdam, East Canje and Hearts of Oak Masters. The teams were placed into two groups with the top team in the respective groups emerging to play in the final, which saw North New Amsterdam A winning in group ‘A’ with North New Amsterdam B emerging from group ‘B’.
In the final, North New Amsterdam ‘A’ through a goal from Ron Hackim needled their ‘B’ counterparts 1-0 to take top honours and walk away with the Town Day trophy.
In preliminary play – North New Amsterdam ‘A’ defeated Central New Amsterdam 2-0 with Stefan DeFlorimonte and Delroy Ferdinand scoring. In another game, Hearts of Oak Masters and South New Amsterdam played to a 0-0 draw with Hearts of Oak winning on penalties.
Central New Amsterdam then defeated East Canje 2-0 with Stephan Boucher netting the double. North New Amsterdam ‘B’ then played to a 0-0 draw with South New Amsterdam with North B winning the ensuing penalty shoot out.
North NA ‘A’ then edged East Canje 2-1 with Devon Ferdinand and Devon James scoring for the winners. East Canje got their goal off the boot of Rhondel Hazel. North NA ‘B’ through goals from Rohan Damon and Osborn August then had the better of Hearts of Oak Masters 2-1 with Seon Bristol scoring for the losers.
At the end of the competition the winner and runner up teams were presented with their accolades.
The competition was organised by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club and was coordinated by former national players Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey, Philip ‘Pine’ Carrington and Ike Bowery. (Samuel Whyte)
