West Demerara content with giving good account
Districts like North Georgetown, Bartica and Corentyne can have lofty aspirations of winning the overall title at the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championship, but others are just content to give a good account of their performances.
West Demerara, District 3, is one such District, having places seventh of 16 teams last year, they intend to continue their ascendancy, and good showing, among the ‘big guns’, albeit, with much less arsenal than the usual frontrunners in the competition.
This year, like previous years, West Demerara admitted that it would not have a full compliment of athletes and as such, they will not be competing in quite a few events, which leaves them at a great disadvantage. Nevertheless, they intend to be competitive.
The District 3 Sports Representative, Gem Bowman said that while her team is small in numbers, 63 athletes and 16 teachers to be exact, those that have been selected will hopefully give a good account of themselves against some of the titans.
Bowman said most of the athletes represented the District last year and are aware that they will have to improve this year. She said they have been training very hard and should be 100 percent ready to take on the opposition during November 20-23 at the National Stadium.
She is expecting much from Talisha Allicock, who won the Girls Under-10 Cricket Ball Throw two years ago. However, Allicock has moved up to another age group and will not be competing in that even this year, instead, she will compete in the Girls Under-12 Discus Throw and a 1000-metre track race.
Another athlete, who much is expected from, is Miguel Williams who broke the Boys Under-12 Long Jump record last year. Like Allicock, Williams will be contesting different events this year. He is down to contest the1000-metre and the high jump.
As it relates to the Swimming competition, Bowman informed that the District does not have any swimmers for several age groups. Swimming will be held at the Castellani Pool Tuesday, the 19th of November while athletics and cycling follow on the other days.
