…$1M for open winner
After enjoying overwhelming success in the recently concluded Super 12\12 tournament, the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL Inc) will be hosting the inaugural Republic Cup in January 2014. The tournament will be staged between January 24 and 26 and consist of two categories, the open and over 40.
The Open segment will be of 20 overs duration and the over 40 will be 12 overs aside. The GSCL inc. has up for grabs, a first place prize of $1M, a trophy and 15 medallions, with the second placed team pocketing $200,000, a trophy and the same number of medallions in the open division.
In the Over-40 category, the winners will pocket $600,000, a trophy and medallions while the second placed team will take home $200,000 a trophy and medals, with the Man of the series for both categories receiving a three piece living room suite or cash equivalent and the Man of the Match of the final, $10,000 and a trophy.
Teams desirous of competing in the Open category, are asked to pay an entrance fee of $140,000, while those who wish to do battle in the Over-40 segment will have to pay an entrance fee of $120,000, with registration closing off on 17th January 2014, while the drawing will take place on 22nd January at a venue to be announced.
Vice President of the GCSL Inc Ian John said at a briefing held on Monday at GNIC Sports Club, that organizing this competition is the entity’s way of keeping softball players active, while it can also help fine tune their skills for next year’s ‘Guyana Softball Cup 4’. He stated that it is the brain child of GSCL Inc Trustee Mahendra Hardyal.
“While we are looking at teams from Guyana to compete, an invitation has been extended to teams from Suriname, Canada, Florida and New York”, added John.
It is expected that teams such as Wolf Warriors, Berbice Titans, Regal XI, Memorex, Speedboat and Trophy Stall will seek to capture the first place prize in the Open category, while Regal XI, Savage Masters and Industry Super Kings, should be amongst the list of competitors in the Over-40 category.
Preliminary matches are expected to be played at Everest Cricket Club, Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, and the Ministry of Education ground. The semi finals and final will be contested at Everest Cricket Club; the final in the open category will take place under lights and is expected to be broadcast live on radio.
Meanwhile, the quarterfinals of the Digimax over 35 and open tournament will be played on November 30 and the semifinals and final will take place on December 1 at Everest Cricket Club. In the over 35 category Regal will take on Super Star, Park Rangers will battle Ogle, Savage will challenge Frontline and Super Kings will face Success. In the open division, Regal will play Super Eagle, Betterhope will match skills with Farm, Wolf’s Warriors will take on Princess and Trophy Stall will battle Challengers in the quarter finals.
A media XI will take on Romain XI in an exhibition game before the final of the open category.
The Essequibo leg of the said tournament will culminate on December 8 at Golden Fleece. Die Hard, Adventure, Golden Fleece and Cotton Field Oats are the teams in the semis.
