Medical staffers at the Campbellville Health Centre and a few dentists from the Cheddi Jagan Dental School on Tuesday held a mini health fair where they sensitized a number of patients on oral health and the danger of diabetes.
The fair was held at the Campbellville Health Centre in observation of World Diabetes Day which is being observed worldwide today.
A number of patients turned up at the health centre to access free dental checkups and to be educated more on diabetes.
Head of the Health Centre, Dr. Kampta Prashad, said, “To spread awareness on Diabetes around the world, World Health Organization along with the International Federation for Diabetes has this day set aside.”
He explained that the reason November 14 was chosen for World Diabetes Day is that “Frederick Banting, the man who developed insulin, was born on that date.”
According to Prashad, the aim of the Tuesday’s event was to educate people on diabetes, types of diabetes, and how to prevent this deadly illness.
“We did foot screening, we educated people on the types of footwear they should use and the importance of wearing proper footwear,” Prashad stressed.
Persons were also educated on the types of food they should eat, “we also have pamphlets with basic information on diabetes and we showed them the medication they should take.”
Meanwhile, the head of the dental section, Dr. Uon Sandiford said that the amount of persons who sought dental checkups was overwhelming.
“We were screening and educating people on oral care, flossing and advising persons to visit their dentist regularly. Most people come here for cleaning and many of them tend to think cleaning is all about whitening of the teeth but it is not, it is about removing dental plaque from the teeth,” Sandiford stressed.
