It’s less than one month prior to the kickoff of the K&S Schools’ Football Tournament slated for December 8 to January 1 next, the organisers are busy putting the modalities in place to ensure that the fans enjoy a quality laden tournament and all the principals are properly prepared for the rigors involved.
Activities kick off this morning when the organisers host a workshop for more than 40 physical education teachers from schools around the country that concludes tomorrow morning. Renowned Trinidadian Coach and former coach of the Golden Jaguars, Jamal Shabazz will be among the facilitators among whom are GFF Vice President, Ivan Persaud, and Physiotherapist, Debita Harripersaud.
Mohammad’s Enterprise of Lombard Street Stabroek has injected millions into the success of the tournament ever since it started and that entity continues to render support. Towards this end the businessman has committed to exclusive sponsorship of today’s event and yesterday afternoon that entity handed over uniforms for all of the participants of the seminar.
Additionally, those representatives of the non participating schools will also receive uniforms and will also participate in the seminar.
One of the Directors of the K&S outfit, Kashif Muhammad, explained that each participant will receive two sets of uniforms, one for indoors, and the other for outdoor activities. He said that the idea to integrate non participating schools into the seminar is a part of the long term projections of his group to prepare those teams for eventual participation in future tournaments.
Meanwhile, a part of the sponsorship package was handed over yesterday afternoon and Mr. Shabazz joined with ‘the K&S principals and national Coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover in collecting them.
He expressed deep gratitude to his benefactor for his act of chivalry and said that the quality of the tournament would be greatly enhanced. “It is very important for a seminar of this nature to precede the tournament so that the coaches may have a cohesive approach to activities,” said Mr. Shabazz.
He opined that had there been similar tournaments and seminars during the active tenure of such stalwarts as Collie Hercules, Nigel Codrington and Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard among others, the standard of the sport would have been greatly improved. He further said that the function has the potential of enhancing discipline among the students.
Participating schools will be drawn from Linden (4), West Bank Demerara (4), Georgetown (8), East Coast Demerara (4), East Bank Demerara (2), Mazaruni and Berbice (1 apiece).
The winning team will cart off M$1.2, the second to fourth place finishers receive $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively. Seventy five percent of all prize monies will be allocated towards a project identified by the respective school’s administration.
Additionally, the winners will receive a beautiful trophy and 25 replicas while the second and third place teams receive trophies and 25 silver and bronze medals respectively. The Most Valuable Player will receive one laptop computer. Today’s activities get underway at 09:00hrs.
