A 27-year-old Prison Officer yesterday appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was required to respond to a charge which alleged that he sneaked ten packs of Bristol Cigarettes into the Georgetown Prisons.
Dineshram Seeraj, of Lot 48 Cumberland Village, Berbice, pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to him.
The prosecution was represented by Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt who told the court that on November 2, the defendant, at about 16:45hrs reported for duty. The court heard that, Seeraj was subsequently searched by other prison officers and 10 packs of cigarettes were found on his person.
Hunt stated that Seeraj was then told of the offence, cautioned and charged.
Representing the accused was Defence Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat who told the court that his client is a ‘chain smoker’ who was taking the items into the prison for his own use. Fung-a-Fat said that this is a privilege of a prison warden and further stated that his client had five packs and was not found selling the items to anyone.
Fung-a-Fat made a request for his client to be released on reasonable bail. His application was met with no objection by the Prosecution. The matter will be called again on November 27 in the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
