Dear Editor,
There will be a lot of rubbish about election over the next few days as Parliament resumes sitting and the PPP did not get to bully the opposition into voting for the Anti-Money Laundering Bill. The PPP regime is confused and has lost the trust and confidence of the people.
And the fact that President Ramotar has refused to establish the Procurement Commission and not assenting to all the Local Government Bill is enough evidence that the PPP has lost all credibility to govern. And so we say to the PPP cabal, if you are confident that you will win, then call the elections now.
But the rubbish is not only about elections but also about what will happen to the business sector whose interests have trumped those of the masses. Today, in Guyana the focus of the private sector is how much money its members can make thus ignoring the human development aspect of the country and the garbage that is steadily piling up in the nation’s capital.
This is happening because of the minority PPP regime’s dictatorial approach to the Mayor and City Councilors of Georgetown. Town Clerk Carol Sooba has been the dictator of city politics in her attempt to implement her regime’s corrupt practices on city residents. She has not issued a single statement on the piles and piles of rotten garbage all over Georgetown and against the vindictive PPP cabal for refusing to provide adequate funds to help the struggling city get rid of its huge piles of garbage.
As the Town Clerk, Miss Carol should be more concerned about the rotten garbage in the city and the dangers it poses to the health of the residents than her insane confrontations with the Mayor and town councilors.
The PPP intent in refusing to provide funds to the city is clearly an act of sabotage against the residents, the majority of whom are APNU/PNC supporters. Incidentally, there have been many attempts by the PPP regime to prevent the city from raising its own funds.
The PPP refusal to keep the city clean will not only affect tourism that Guyana so badly needs but will also make Georgetown the dirtiest city in the Caribbean and the world. Does the Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali believe that tourists from North America and Europe would visit a city that stinks, full of garbage and poses a health hazards to people?
Is the Minister and is PPP cabal so blind and so silly that they cannot see that Georgetown has become an un-healthy city for anyone to dwell? Only a reckless, uncaring and spiteful government will allow the nation’s capital to deteriorate to the level it is now. And we have the incompetent Town Clerk, Carol Sooba who is making the news almost every day for all the wrong reasons.
It is time for Carol Sooba to show some decency, integrity, and morality and order the removal of the piles of garbage in Georgetown. It is humane to do so.
From outside, the City governmental system looks dysfunctional and weak. Its reputation has been severely fractured, and confidence in the Mayor has been seriously undermined. But the spiteful PPP regime should know that their vile antics have caused them more harm than good and even their own supporters who live in the city are abandoning them.
Dr. Asquith Rose and Harish S. Singh.
