The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is ahead of their rivals, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) after day one of the Inter-Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC) at the Police Sports Club, at Eve Leary, following a belated start of the 2013 competition.
The Police Force is ahead with 98 points with the Defence Force trailing on 71 points. No other competing team, namely the Guyana Fire Service, Guyana Police Service and City Constabulary are in double figures with the Police and Soldiers already making the contest a two-way battle at the damp venue; GPF and GDF tied for the title last year.
Cindy Moses prepares her landing gear en route to capturing the Women’s Long Jump title yesterday at the Eve Leary.
Owed to a strong performance in the Women’s Long Jump event that the Police swept yesterday, the Force that also mourned the loss of two of their colleagues in a shootout on Middle Street, got ahead of the soldiers heading into today’s competition.
Tracy Moses leaped to 5.29m in the event while Cindy Fraser and Tandika Burgess had distances of 5.26m and 5.23m to make the Women’s Long Jump an all-police contest; the men’s long jump will be contested today after time ran out on officials yesterday.
Rain threatened the hosting of the competition on Monday and morning showers further damped the venue yesterday. However, distance ace, Cleveland Forde put the GDF ahead early when the dynamo roasted an impressive field in the Men’s 5000m race.
Police’s, barefooted Nathaniel Giddings, who set the pace as usual, was second while the GDF’s Tyshon Bentick was third. Dennis Horatio sunk to fourth in the race after being in contention for some time in the distance event. It was a feisty contest.
Jenella Jonas (GDF) won the Women’s 3000m race ahead of Defence Force’s Carlissa Atkinson, who trailed for most of the race. Alita Moore and Letitia Myles were both impressive in their 100 metres heats, setting up an intense contest on the grand finale, Friday. (Edison Jefford)
