– former national champion in the hustings
Following a prolonged hiatus from the local scene, former National Senior Chess Champion, Wendell Muesa, returned in full battle gears and is expected to present a serious challenge to the crown held by incumbent, Taffin Khan but he must get past several seasoned players in the qualifiers which commenced at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue Sunday, November 10 last.
The aspiring grand master commenced his trek on a positive note
and easily defeated Alex Joseph and Davion Mars when the first two rounds were completed and joins three other players, Anthony Drayton, Roberto Neto and Chino Chung with similar successes.
Those are the early frontrunners on two points apiece while six other players are on one point each. In all, five junior players have moved up into the senior ranks in an attempt to dethrone Khan.
Muesa clinched the national title after defeating two-time senior champion, Kriskal Persaud, in 2009. He opted not to defend his title in the ensuing championship and Khan succeeded him and subsequently successfully defended the accolade on two consecutively occasions.
The keen rivalry between these two players has always laid the stage for enthralling confrontations and chess supporters could expect more of the same as the tournament climaxes. Both players are FIDE rated with Muesa enjoying a higher rating of 1966 while Khan is rated at 1794.
Play resumes this afternoon at the same venue from 17:30hrs but only the third round will be contested. Rounds four and five would be played on Saturday November 16 next at the Guyana Legion Building, Carifesta Avenue while the players return to the Carifesta Sports Complex for the final two rounds on Sunday November 17.
The top seven performers would automatically qualify for the 2013 National Senior Chess Championship and subsequently, the best will be matched in a showdown with Khan.
