….battle lines drawn from tomorrow; over 70 riders to contest
The seventh edition of Ministry of Health/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport/Guyana Cycling Federation ‘Ride for Life’ Five-Stage Cycle Road Race is set to pedal off tomorrow morning in the Ancient County of Berbice.
Already attracting the highest number of participants in its history to
date, this year’s event which has not seen a high level of overseas participation is still expected to be a keen and strategic contest with the local clubs promising to lift their competitive game.
Since its inception in 2007 when Alanzo Greaves won, Junior Niles followed in 2008 and Geron Williams one year later, no local rider has seen the top podium spot but word is out that that would change this year as they intend to change defend local turf more rigidly.
Competition will get underway tomorrow morning with the first stage from 07:30hrs from the Corriverton Police Station with a distance of 46.6 miles (75Km) set out for the riders to conqueror ending in New Amsterdam.
Stage two tomorrow afternoon commences at Rosignol, West Coast Berbice at 14:00hrs and will last for 60.4Miles (96Km) culminating at Carifesta Avenue in the City.
On Friday, attention will switch to the West Demerara for the third stage on Friday pedaling off from Wales Police Station at 09:00hrs, proceeding to Bushy Park East Bank Essequibo to end the 35 mile (56Km) journey, the shortest of the five stages.
The fourth stage will be contested on Saturday in the Cinderella County of Essequibo moving off at Supenaam from 07:30hrs and will go all the way to the other end, Charity before returning to the village of Suddie for the conclusion.
This leg of the race covers 67 miles (107.05Km) while the final leg set for Sunday will kick off in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden from Cara Cara to Homestretch Avenue in the capital city, a distance of 64.6 miles (103.3km).
Defending champion Jaimal Ramirez (USA based) of Team Coco’s is expected to be here to defend his title and will be teaming up with Antonio Jose Alacon Gonzalez (USA based) and Barbadian Darren Matthews for the local Team Coco’s team. The local’s riders joining them will include, Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony and Junior Niles.
Roraima Bikers Club has been displaying ominous form in the past few race meets and road races and will be mounting a serious challenge for top honours in every segment of proceedings.
Their most decorated rider, Alanzo Greaves will be leading their quest with potent back up from Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton and Virgil Jones among others.
Seasoned campaigner Robin Persaud will be at the helm of Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club’s challenge along with the ever present Godfrey Pollydore and Shameer Baksh.
Continental Cycle Club will include Geron Williams, Enzo Matthews, Ricky Kisson and Female National Road Race Champion Naomi Singh.
Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club will feature the young and talented Akeem Arthur, Shaquille Agard, Hazina Barrett along with the seasoned Rastaff Oselmo.
From the Ancient County, Neil Reece will lead Flying Ace Cycle Club, Trojan Cycle Club also from the East will be in contention.
Flying Stars Cycle Club will include Chris Persaud, Talim Shaw and teenager Alanzo Ambrose.
New kids on the block, United Bike Shop Cycle Club will be coming strong as they have the likes of Captain Albert Philander, Orville and Delroy Hinds and Hamza Eastman.
While fans can look forward to a more strategic race from a team standpoint, the individual battle will be equally exciting.
Transportation for cyclists and officials will leave the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Middle Street Office at 12:00hrs today for Corriverton.
