– National Schools’ C/ships loom
Corentyne, District 6, without much seasoned athletes has been holding their own at the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships and dream of one day earning the overall title after knocking on it door for a number of years.
The District, which is usually in the background, was third overall last year behind titans District 11, North Georgetown, and District 10, Upper Demerara/Kwakwani, respectively, and dreams of improving that performance despite their weakness in swimming.
“It is our hope and dream that we win the championships; we do

well in the teachers competition as well as in cycling and track and field, but we don’t often place in the swimming,” Corentyne’s Sports Representative, Paula Pereira told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
According to Pereira, even though they do not have the rigorous training programmes like their counterparts, the athletes are very committed to sports and naturally talented. She said they have a system that allows teachers to help student-athletes with training.
“Most of our athletes are naturally talented; our teachers are the ones who assist our athletes with training, we don’t have a rigid training programme,” Pereira informed, which was a remarkable revelation for a team that places consistently within the top five at ‘Nationals’.
When asked how they are able to accomplish such a feat, Pereira admitted that their strength is in the cycling. “We have been winning cycling for a number of years; swimming is where we often fall down. We don’t have a full swimming team,” Pereira said.
Corentyne has never won ‘Nationals’ overall, but that fact is not deterring them from aspiring to the title, notwithstanding their weakness in swimming. According to Pereira, they see District 11 and District 10 as their main opposition next week.
“We have a full-strength team. Once we can compete with Linden and Georgetown, maybe we’ll be in the reckoning,” Pereira believes. The National Schools Championships will be held during November 19-22 with swimming at the Castellani Pool on 19th and cycling and track and field at the National Stadium from 20-22.
