The 2ND Annual Berbice Open Table Tennis Competition will be held on November 17, 2013 at the Port Mourant Training Centre on the Corentyne. Play time is 09:00 hrs. This year’s competition promises to be bigger and better with quite a few youngsters aiming to catch the eyes of the selectors of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).
According to the Coordinator of the event, Mr. Floyd Conway, it will be played in four categories: Under-13, 15, 18 and Open Category. The competition is being sponsored by U.S. based Guyanese Berbician, Mr. Souvenir Ramdeholl, co-sponsored by U.S. based Guyanese, Mr. Lanny Anthony and overseas-based Guyanese, Mr. Patrick Narine.
The winners will take home cash incentives as well as trophies.
Teams will be coming from Skeldon, Kwakwani, as well as from West Coast Berbice and New Amsterdam. Gibran Hussain of Skeldon; Rono Joseph of New Amsterdam; Desiree Lancaster of New Amsterdam are among the popular names vying for the Open Category.
“They in fine form and they are playing well. They are training hard,” Conway said. “The practice sessions are intense…they practice every day, except on weekends.”
“We will like full participation especially from the schools,” he urged. There is no registration fee, he stated. “It’s free and there will be incentives not only for the winners but for participation as well.”
Among those other players are the likes of Jamal Butts, Jordan Conway, Kris Sookoo, Joshua Lallbachand, Bryton Murray, Stefan Sankar and Nicholas Lawrence. All players belong to the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension Table Tennis Club based in New Amsterdam. President of GTTA Mr. Godfrey Munroe and General Secretary Mr. Linden Johnson will be present for the day’s action.
The deadline for registration is this Friday. Circulars were sent out to the various schools across Berbice requesting participation.
