Two policemen, a Sergeant and a Corporal, were on Monday remanded to jail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs –Marcus on an arrest warrant issued for their arrest after they failed to turn up in court to testify in a matter that was being tried before her.
The two traffic officers, Police Sergeant 18281 Lloyd Thomas, and 2012 Best Cop Corporal 19673 Azad Ali, failed to attend court to testify in a causing death by dangerous driving case currently being heard before the magistrate in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
Edson Inniss of Lot 88 Amsville Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam is on trial for causing death by dangerous driving. He is accused of driving motor car PDD 5925 in a dangerous manner on November 24, last year along Main and Alexander Streets New Amsterdam, and killed 23-year-old Sastia Natasha Phillips formerly of Lot 5 Fifth Street, Islington, East Bank Berbice.
The driver reportedly fled the scene and hid the car which was later discovered by Sergeant Thomas at Lot 188 Amsville Housing Scheme. Ali was one of the investigating officers and had visited the scene of the incident.
After the men did not show up in court an arrest warrant was subsequently issued for their arrest last Friday.
The two men were present in court on Monday and gave unsatisfactory answers when questioned about their absence. Thomas stated that he forgot the court date. Ali in his response told the court that he was unwell. When asked if he had a medical certificate, he stated that he had none. He also had no reason, when asked why he did not inform the Prosecutor or the Registrar that he was ill.
The magistrate then remanded the policemen to prison until November 14.
She also observed that policemen are seldom taken to prison when they are remanded. The case continues on December 2nd.
