Pepsi Sonics exhumed Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA)-sanctioned Yolo Entertainment ‘Super Sevens’ title Sunday night after a lifeless performance in the preliminary round of the inaugural competition on Burnham Basketball Court.
Collis ‘Forty’ Pluck’s crunch-time three-pointer two weekends ago breathed life into the team as it went on to win the title 52-28 against Colts on Sunday. Pluck was again at the forefront with 14 points, while Jason Squires had 13 points and Kerwin Jackson 10 points for Pepsi Sonics in the final. Shelroy Thomas scored 18 points for Colts.
IPA’s Shafeez Ali hands over the Super Sevens Championship trophy to Pepsi Sonics while the GABA President, Michael Singh (right), Yolo’s Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine (second, right) and Pepsi Sonics Coach, Mark Agard (left) also share the moment.
Sonics started hot, with Squires, who struggled earlier in the tournament, landing huge shots and getting to the basket for easy lay-ups that put them up 11-2 early in the game. Thomas responded with his usual heroics, but Sonics’ defence withstood his tests.
Sonics completely controlled the game. Squires had scored 18 points against Buxton Lions for a 52-31 win in their semi-final. Pluck added 12 points. Ewart Smith had 18 points for Buxton that defeated Pacesetters en-route to a place in the ‘Super Sevens’ semis.
Colts had defeated Melanie 37-22 to reach the final. Thomas dropped 11 points while Ronrecio Kyte also had 11 points. Sherlon Legal had eight points for Melanie.
In the third place playoff, Smith scored 18 points again to help Buxton Lions beat Melanie 43-29 with support from Kerwin Dey, who had 10 points. Legal was again at the helm of the Melanie’s offence with 14 points.
Before Sunday’s final the GABA Executive that comprises former national centre, Eon Andrews, Adrian Hooper and President, Michael Singh among others defeated the Sports Media 30-11 in a hilarious contest that produced lots of entertainment and nostalgia.
Singh hailed the initiative as a positive one for the development of basketball in Georgetown at a simple presentation ceremony, following the competition. “Put your hands together for the first person to come forward with an initiative and a plan to continue with basketball development in Georgetown,” Singh urged.
The GABA President informed that the ‘Super Sevens’ was good warm-up for the second edition of the Phillip George Memorial competition, which is slated for later this month. He said GABA is committed to brining basketball back to where it belongs.
Meanwhile, Marketing Manager at International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA), Shafeez Ali, said that his company was proud to be associated with the competition under their Clear Waters brand and they have definitely seen a lot of talented youth on show.
Mackeson, Hinds and Statia Financial Services, Creative Jewellery, Precise Printing, Garage Bar, Harris Paints, Organic Natural Resources Management, HJTV & 94.1 FM and Starr Party Rentals were the other sponsors of the ‘Super Sevens’.
