DEAR EDITOR,
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) under the leadership of Mr. Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron has assigned a special committee, including the current Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), to investigate the maladministration of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA).
This is indeed a welcome posture given the mandate of the WICB to ensure its associate members are in keeping with transparent, democratic and procedural principles of governance. The situation in Guyana is similar, yet Mr. Cameron seemed unmoved to have the situation resolved despite a vociferous and collective appeal by two thirds of the constituent members of the GCB.
I read with interest a letter in the Kaieteur newspaper dated 2013-11-07 and signed by the President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) et al as cricket stakeholders that quite unequivocally highlighted the grave situation that still exists within the present GCB.
I am even more surprised that several aspects of the letter were previously discussed with Mr. Cameron yet the WICB has remained ignorant of the need to intervene or mediate. This is indeed very disappointing, especially with the imminent passage of the Cricket Administration Bill which could pave the way for free and fair elections, a similar situation that the WICB would like to see in the Leeward Islands.
I am therefore imploring Mr. Cameron to be impartial and lead objectively and with dignity in an effort towards safeguarding the sanctity of West Indies cricket that the likes of Sir Viv Richards, Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Everton Weekes et al would have selflessly and loyally preserved with pride.
I have even read a letter by Mr. Cameron that was addressed to the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Raphael Trotman that sought to reject the Cricket Administration Bill that will be taken to Parliament. He stated that the WICB will not agree with the disbanding of the Guyana Cricket Board being a shareholder of the WICB.
What Mr. Cameron should have done first was to establish the legitimacy of the GCB which currently is devoid of two thirds of its constituent members (Berbice Cricket Board and Demerara Cricket Board). It is therefore inherent upon the WICB to challenge the GCB to prove otherwise and subsequently to produce a public statement for the benefit of the stakeholders of cricket in Guyana.
The Guyana Cricket Board will not be disbanded; instead it will be the removal of the illegal structures that created the current GCB that the Bill will seek to implement and to provide legitimacy to the process. It is this process that Mr. Cameron needs to address as president of the West Indies Cricket Board.
