– First local female to drive 125cc Shifter Kart
Raised in a family of outstanding motor racers, hardly anyone would have betted against young Emma Vieira gravitating to the sport of motor racing, having grown up all her life among some of the best drivers and riders to be produced by this country.
Emma, who still attends school, when she takes to the track at the South Dakota Circuit on November 24 to compete in the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) will become the first Guyanese female to race a 125cc Shifter Kart which is a significant achievement, especially at the tender age of 15 years.
The young karter who is a member of the Vieira clan, one of the more illustrious names in motor racing that dates back a long time and whose father Mark is among the best drivers in the country and the Caribbean, has been recording some impressive performances during practice sessions and has been tipped to do well in the category.
According to her father Mark, she is a very good driver who has been honing her skills in the sport for the past two years under his tutelage and he is confident that even though she will be going up against the men, he still expects her to hold her own.
“Emma is extremely confident in her ability and has been going hard at practice and cannot wait to get on the grid and display her skills in front of the anticipated large turnout of motor racing fans,” Mark said.
The last time a female karter was seen in Guyana was Canada’s Julianna Chiviotti, who did well against her male counterparts and Emma will certainly be setting her sights on duplicating her performance.
What is certain is that her career in racing will start in the next 13 days and there is no doubt that fans will be eager to see the young upcoming star in the sport in action.
