From the tender age of 5 ½ Sachia Vickery told her mother, Paula Liverpool, she was going to be the next Serena Williams. She has not yet attained that feat but at a pleasantly ranked position of 182 in the world, Sachia, at just 18 years old, has already won the American U-18 title, clinched a wild card spot to the American Open Championships and is perched to accomplish her dreams.
Sachia recently returned to Guyana and ever since has been on a tight schedule in her mission to interact with local lawn tennis players and impart some of her knowledge.
A young tennis player, Daniel Lopes, presents the lawn tennis star with a token while other members of the lawn tennis fraternity look on.
Yesterday afternoon she visited the GBTI Recreation Centre and Sports Club, Kaieteur Street, Bel Air Park, where she mingled with several of the nation’s junior players. She even found the time to engage some of them in short ‘knock ups’ and later admitted that the standard of play was encouraging.
Later on, the lawn tennis star presented a set of gears to the players who returned the chivalry by presenting her with a token of appreciation. “You guys have played well; you can all be pros; work hard and you will be successful,” urged Ms Vickery. She also advised them to pay keen attention to their training sessions since it is here that players develop their skills. “Stamina is important,” she advised while intimating that her daily training schedule consist of at least 4 hours on the courts and another 90 minutes of jogging.
First Vice President of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA), Grace McCalman was also at the function and thanked Ms Vickery for sharing quality time with the players. She said that tennis had been in the doldrums until 2000 when she joined with several other enthusiasts to rekindle activities. “Sacha’s visit will surely boost the enthusiasm and bolster the fortunes of the sport,” said Ms McCalman.
Sachia Vickery was 5 ½ when she Vickery watched Serena and her sister Venus on TV and decided to make tennis her life goal. She even spent a summer with their dad Richard Williams as her coach. Those dreams are slowly coming to fruition and the young tennis star has vowed to continue in that vein all the way to her life dream.
