– Calls for legal recourse for animal cruelty
An injured abandoned horse was terminated yesterday after being left on the roadside for days. Its foal was taken into custody by relevant authorities.
According to Amber Lowu, the animal was abandoned Thursday morning. The Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) was contacted and an inspector visited, inspected the animal and concluded that the animal had to be putdown and that the GSPCA would need the Neighbourhood Democratic Council to remove the body.
The council claimed that “it don’t have time with it and it don’t have space. The zoo was contacted and said that it can’t deal with such a matter. Then when the Ministry of Home Affairs stray animal section was contacted, they said that matter was secondary and they can’t deal with that right now.”
It was also noted that when the inspector visited the owner of the horse in Eccles, East Bank Demerara the man locked his house and refused to have anything to do with the animal after abandonment.
Private sector representative, Noreen Gaskin, was praised for assisting with the payment of a Canter to remove the animal and take it to be buried, while Amber Lowu also assisted financially to ensure everyone who assisted was compensated. An inspector from the GSPCA, Jerfild Wrights, euthanised the horse.
Animal rights activist, Syeada Manbodh, who was called in to assist, said the laws really have to be revisited since enforcement is lacking.
She said during her many rescues (of stricken animals) she came across terrible abuses.
