Team Manager of New Amsterdam/Canje, District 15, Heathcliff Peters, believes that their team can win overall at the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championship, which will be held during November 19-22, at the National Stadium.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport last evening, Peters said that his swimming team is not the strongest, owed to the absence of a resident coach and a facility in the District, but nevertheless, his team is extremely competitive in the other three competitions.
To win the overall title at the National Schools’ Championship, Districts must either win or place highly in the swimming, cycling, teachers’ and track and field competitions. Peters informed that his cycling, track and field and teachers’ teams are very strong.
“We would have registered our team on Thursday last and what I’ll tell you is that we’re coming with a full cycling team and our athletics and teachers’ teams are very strong as well; as it relates to swimming, we don’t have much swimmers,” Peters indicated.
“We will begin our campaign with the cycling road race where we will be fielding four athletes. I believe this is one competition where we will be very, very solid,” he continued, adding that his national cyclist, Marica Dick will lead that team in her last year at ‘Nationals’.
According to Peters, “Our friends in Georgetown has the upper hand because of their swimming”, but the likes of Dick and the national junior track and field star, Melissa Byass, could swing the pendulum back in his favour with outstanding performances.
Both Dick and Byass represented Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) and have been at the forefront of performances for years at ‘Nationals’. Byass will be competing in the 400m, 800m and 1500m Under-18 races. Byass is the 800m Under-14 record holder, which she set in 2009 at Albion.
In addition, New Amsterdam/Canje has outstanding high jumper, Shaquille Gentle, as part of its fold, among many other notable athletes that could give them an advantage. Of the 16 competing Districts, New Amsterdam/Canje placed sixth overall last year.
“We are coming to win; we would have worked out winning the cycling and teachers contest and placing highly in the track and field competition. Once we can do that, and place in swimming too, we know we can win overall,” the District 15 Team Manager believes.
