– Three of the fastest cars in the C/bean will be on the grid
He could be considered somewhat of an enigma, sometimes in the mood and another time not so keen on racing, but what is irrefutable is the fact that once he takes to the starting grid, his commitment is 100% and there could be no doubt about that.
Mark Vieira sat down yesterday to talk to Kaieteur Sport about the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) season ending Meet scheduled to be staged on November 24, at the South Dakota Circuit and his own chances of doing well.
Vieira, who will be making a return after a brief hiatus following a dominating performance earlier in the year, left no reservation about his intent to do well at the upcoming event.
The motor racing ace when questioned about his own expectations made it clear that his anticipation is to win, and dominate the Group.
“My expectation is to win, I simply cannot go out there with any other consideration I’m a racer and one who likes to win,” Vieira told this newspaper.
Vieira, who drives a Mazda RX 8 said he was able to do a bit of testing recently and feels quite satisfied with the car’s performance, informing that it is very fast when compared with the speed it generated earlier this year.
According to Vieira, they were able to identify the source of the problem which was a fuel mix issue and that has been remedied since.
Commenting on the chances of Team Guyana, Vieira opined that it has to be the strongest for sometime and while he conceded that Jamaican Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore’s Audi TT will be fast, he felt that they will show him a couple of things that he has never seen before.
“I think, however, that the real winners will be the fans, they have the opportunity to see three of the fastest cars in the Caribbean on the grid and that is fantastic,” Vieira said.
Quizzed on why he has not been a consistent feature in motor racing over the past 2-3 years, Vieira disclosed that he has been in the sport for a very long time and remaining motivated has been difficult, adding that during the period away he also found the time to teach and develop the skills of his son Matthew and daughter Emma, who are both involved in the sport.
“I think they are right where I want them to be so now I can start to re-focus on my own involvement in the sport, I am ready to resume my own career.”
He said there has been a lot of talk about why he has been absent from the sport, but now he will be aiming to put all the talk to rest.
Vieira promised that the fans will get more that their monies worth and assured that when they leave the South Dakota Circuit, they will leave as proud Guyanese.
“I love Guyana and I will make my country proud,” Vieira assured.
The straight talking racer noted that the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club is at its strongest right now and cited the recent affiliation to the FIA as a measure of the club’s ongoing development.
“We got the design for an upgraded circuit paid for by the FIA and we’ve done the groundwork for the Plan which is anticipated to be inspected by an Engineer, who is expected to arrive sometime to do on site examinations.
He mentioned the ongoing development of young racers as testimony to the Club’s obligation to the sport which fans will benefit from for a long time to come.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism which has been on board for the past three years will once again partner the GMR&SC in an event that has evolved into a major sport tourism attraction.
GT&T, Seaboard Marine, Valvoline, Banks Beer and King’s Jewellery World are the major sponsors for this event.
