Robin Persaud back in winner’s row; Mario King tops juvenile field
By Franklin Wilson
Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club member Robin Persaud returned to winning ways and in fine style when he romped to victory in the feature event of the inaugural C. Dookie and Sons Contracting Services/B&R Investment 11-Race Meet programme yesterday at the National Park.
Already enjoying a number of top podium finishes this year, Persaud would have been outdone by some of his rivals in previous races, but the seasoned veteran turned the tide yesterday riding home all alone in One Hour 18 Minutes 32.13 Seconds.
He finished some distance ahead of the second placed Albert Philander who has been finding some encouraging form albeit towards the end of the season. Paul Choo-Wee-Nam placed third followed by Godfrey Pollydore in a sprint home ahead of Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and Wasim Gafoor in that order.
Persaud was so dominant that he took four of the eight prime prizes with three going to Raynauth Jeffrey and the other to Warren Mc Kay.
Yesterday’s event served as warm up for this week’s Five-Stage contest which will once again test the individual and collective abilities of the local riders. It is not quite certain to date how many overseas cyclists will be here for the event which will pedal off on Thursday in Corriverton, Berbice.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Team Coco’s (Miami and Guyana) will be combining efforts with two Columbians and another rider is expected join their local counterparts.
Mario King of United Bike Shop was the best junior/juvenile on the day winning the 10-lap tussle in 22 minutes 44.17 Seconds. Jeban Crawford and Alanzo Ambrose completed the top three podium positions.
Junior Niles (Team Coco’s), who has already put his stamp on the Under-50 category events, was again unbeatable winning the 5-lap match-up in 11 minutes 51.02 Seconds.
Meanwhile, all the riders except for the BMX will be in action again today, the final warm-up event before the five-stage when they collide in the 14th Diamond Mineral Water 50-mile Road Race on the West Demerara from 08:00hrs.
