With a budget estimated to be positioned between $32-35 million, the thirty-two (32) teams participating in the Third Annual Banks Beer Knockout Cup scheduled to be played from November 23- January 1 will not walk away empty-handed.
This was disclosed during the official launching of the tournament which was conducted yesterday in the Boardroom of the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank, Demerara.
In attendance at the occasion were Georgetown Football Association (GFA) President Vernon Burnett, Banks Beer Brand Manager Brian Choo-Hen, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart, Banks DIH pro Troy Peters, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Vice-President Ivan Persaud, Referees Co-ordinator Roy McArthur, officials of the invited sub-associations, clubs representatives, players and the media.
The tournament which was born in controversial circumstances, replacing another yearend competition has grown in impact since and is now viewed as the biggest event to usher in the Christmas season and one that local footballers eagerly look forward to.
Burnett under whose stewardship the tournament commenced speaking at the Launch reiterated the GFA’s happiness to once again be partnering with Banks DIH to host another edition of the event, while disclosing the entity’s decision to increase the amount of teams that will participate this year.
He also extended thanks to the associations that will be involved in the tournament, while pointing to the support that has been offered by the GFF.
Persaud, who represented the GFF immediately, stressed the importance of the tournament, informing that it will definitely assist in the further development of the sport as well as giving the national body the scope to choose from a larger pool of players, all due to the GFA-organised Banks Beer Cup.
He extended gratitude on behalf of the GFF to the GFA and Banks DIH for making it a lot easier on the GFF to spot the talent that will be on display. Persaud was high in praise of Banks DIH, who he noted is in every sphere of football and at all levels and urged the coaches and players to prepare assiduously to produce a high brand of football since the standard will be judged by the performance of the national teams.
Choo-Hen in his remarks reminded all present that Guyana is Beer country and as a Company they are happy to be associated with the tournament.
“Banks is having a football fever going on right now and we are involved in many aspects of the sport’s development.”
He called on the players to go out on the field and represent their respective teams and exhibit a high standard of play.
Meanwhile, the winning team will receive $4million; runner-up-$2.5million; 3rd place-$1.5million and 4th place-$-1million.
The Organisers also revealed that all the quarter-finalists are guaranteed $250,000, while all first round teams will collect $100,000 and second round losers $150,000. There are also prizes for outstanding individual performances.
Matches will be played over a 16-day duration at the Mackenzie Sport Club, Den Amstel, Buxton Community Centre, Georgetown Football Club, Georgetown Cricket Club, while the use of the Camp Ayanganna ground is also being explored.
It was announced that 20% of the gate receipts will be given to the host association by the orgainsers after all expenses are deducted.
