The Guyana Police Force plans to further clampdown on illegal alcohol vending so as to ensure that drivers desist from driving under the influence. To date, about 15 persons who vend at the city bus and car parks have been arrested and charged.
The police said that in light of the increasing spate of road accidents, the raids are aimed at controlling drunk-driving among drivers of minibuses and other vehicles.
This action has been taken to directly combat drunk-driving since it was recognised that the selling of alcohol at these areas allows drivers to easily access alcohol.
Law enforcers stated that they have been performing raids on the bus parks in an effort to directly address the issue of drunk-driving since many drivers are in the habit of consuming alcohol before they embark on their journeys.
According to the police, the raids will be continuous and designed to protect scores of people who entrust their lives to drunken drivers. The police said that the first point to check is the motor park so as to ensure safety and to reduce the number of road accidents.
The Police stated that anyone who wants to sell any form of alcohol should obtain a permit and the business must operate at an authorised place. The police insisted that the bus park is not one such place.
Persons who risk selling without a licence are liable to two fines; one for the unlawful possession of spirits which would include rum, wine and whiskey. The other is for selling alcoholic beverages such as beer and stout without being in possession of a licence.
For the past two weeks, eight persons appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and were fined between $10,000 and $25,000 for breaching these laws. The Magistrates had made orders for the items to be confiscated and disposed of by the Guyana Revenue Authority.
The police intend to conduct more raids at the parks and will go on to shops that are currently selling without being licenced.
