NATI and Berbice High School to clash in final
Favourites New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) and Berbice High School (BHS) will renew their rivalry when the clash in the final of the Wilbur Hope Memorial Inter Secondary School football competition at All Saints Scott Church ground in New Amsterdam. Both teams registered victories in their respective semifinal matches played at the said venue yesterday.
NATI overpowered defending champions Tutorial Academy 2-1, while Berbice High defeated Vryman’s Ervin Secondary 3-0. Joshua Butts gave Tutorial the lead in the 1st minute, but Anthony Weeks equalized in the 7th minute before a defense error in the 47th minute gave NATI a hard fought victory.
Vryman’s took the lead against BHS when Kevin Sandy slotted home in the 9th minute. Shamar Arendell reduced the deficit in the 18th minute as both team went to half at 1-1. Arendell made it 2-1 in the 52nd minute; his goal eventually proved to be the decider.
The NATI lads, who went into the game having already qualified for the semifinal, drubbed the hapless Canje Secondary School 8-0 in the final game of the preliminary rounds Wednesday.
Three players blasted home doubles for NATI – with Jarrel Walters netting in the 8th and 12th minutes, Steffon Hinds 18th and 22nd minutes and Steffon Boucher 17th and 58th minutes. Also on target were Kerrie Henry and Jeremy Samuels who scored in the 14th and 53 minutes.
The other game was not played since School of the Nations (SON) failed to show up for their encounter against Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS).
The final and third place play off is set for today. The two teams will be adequately rewarded with trophies, medals and other prizes, while the top individual players will also be presented with accolades.
The competition is being sponsored by overseas based Guyanese and US army Solider Kevin Henry and the Hope Foundation and coordinated by Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and members of the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club. (Samuel Whyte)
