Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee is presently undergoing medical treatment at the Woodlands Hospital after collapsing at his home yesterday.
Government officials were tightlipped on the extent of his illness but this newspaper was told that Rohee was taken to the private hospital sometime yesterday afternoon, with what some of his colleagues described as flu-like symptoms.
“Not well… not stroke, nothing serious,” one of his colleagues said.
His absence in the National Assembly, where heated debates took place last night, was noticeable.
Rohee’s workload has increased significantly over the past few months, ever since he was appointed General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), following the party’s last congress earlier this year.
However he has shown no signs of giving up his ministerial post.
In fact he had told a news conference a few months ago that he is ‘fit’ for the portfolios of PPP General Secretary and Minister of Home Affairs, since he is quite capable of discharging his responsibilities efficiently.
Rohee was asked if he felt burdened by his position, considering the crime situation.
He responded, “Feeling is a very subjective issue, and I have two jobs. I have so arranged my life and time to ensure that neither side is short-changed, and that the health and vitality of the General Secretary or Home Affairs Minister remains intact.”
Asked to respond to calls made by the political opposition for him to step down as Minister of Home Affairs, Rohee said that when polling took place at the 2006 elections, from the day the results were announced, the Opposition wanted him to step down, and that call is still resonating up to today.
