LIAT’s management met with its pilots’ union on Tuesday but there were no immediate clear indications how soon normal flights will resume.
According to a statement from the regional airline yesterday, LIAT and the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA) met to discuss issues relating to the recent industrial action by LIALPA.
“The meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere with LIALPA’s team led by its Chairman, Captain Carl Burke, while LIAT’s team was led by Mrs. Julie Reifer-Jones, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO).”
Several pilots did not report for work on Monday causing LIAT to cancel several flights around the Caribbean, and badly affecting Guyanese who were travelling to Barbados, among other destinations.
In Guyana, scores were reportedly left stranded at the Ogle airport including a team of church members destined for Barbados.
LIAT was not committal as to when normal service would resume as talks are ongoing.
“The LIAT Acting CEO welcomed the LIALPA delegation and it was agreed that the meeting would serve as a forum to listen to LIALPA’s concerns and to determine the way forward. The company’s management acknowledged that there are legitimate concerns on the part of LIALPA and it was agreed that both sides would continue discussions in an effort to address the issues.”
The airline, appealing for understanding in light of the inconvenience caused by the delays, said it continues to seek to restore normal operations and efforts to get dislocated passengers to their various destinations “as quickly as possible”.
Guyana is battling to attract more airlines as air travel continues to grow for the country.
LIAT (1974) Ltd, operating as Leeward Islands Air Transport or LIAT, is an airline headquartered on the grounds of V. C. Bird International Airport in Antigua. It operates high-frequency inter-island scheduled services serving 21 destinations in the Caribbean. The airline’s main base is VC Bird International Airport, Antigua and Barbuda, with bases at Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados, and Piarco International Airport, Trinidad and Tobago.
