President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) Mr. Lenox Shuffler presented a quantity of volleyballs and volleyball nets to the President of the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA), Mr. Gregory Rambarran last at a simple presentation ceremony held in his office in Kingston, Georgetown.
Mr. Shuffler, a former National Volleyball Captain, stated that the 50 Mikasa mva 330 volleyballs are in appreciation and recognition of the good work being done by the BVA to promote and develop Volleyball in the county of Berbice. The balls were made available through the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV), while the 50 kids’ volleyballs and 16 nets are to be used for the continuation of the BVA’s Mini-Volley Programme for school children 9-13 years. This programme has been a tremendous success so far.
Mr. Shuffler also pointed out that the Mini-Volley Programme was introduced in primary schools last year after receiving support from FIVB, in the form of finance, special volleyballs, nets and manuals for teachers as part of the wider FIVB development programme to have volleyball promoted at all levels.
The Programme also received the blessings of the Ministry of Education, which through its Allied Arts Unit, held Mini-Volley Festivals in Georgetown, Linden, Region 2, Region 3 and New Amsterdam last year.
BVA President, Mr. Gregory Rambarran in accepting the equipment, stated that his association had held a highly successful Mini-Volley Festival on September 6th for 15 schools in the Lower Corentyne area. He said that interest is very high at the moment and the schools involved in that festival are now prepared to engage in a friendly competition to be held soon.
The kids’ balls and nets will be used for another mini-volley festival in West Berbice. This activity will involve 10 primary schools between Ithaca on the West Bank and Bush Lot on the West Coast, Berbice early in the new school term.
The mva 330 balls will be used for Inter-Club competitions and for tournaments in the Black Bush Polder and other parts of Berbice. These tournaments will be played in an effort to spread the game and form new clubs in those areas.
The presentation was done in the presence of Mr. Arnold Sukhraj of the Allied Arts Unit of the Ministry of Education. The BVA President asked Shuffler to convey his association’s thanks and gratitude to the CSV and FIVB and also thanked the GVF President for making the presentation thus enabling the association to “Keep the Ball Flying”.
