Unbeaten St. Pius will go into Saturday’s final against West Ruimveldt as the clear favourites to win the title following their impressive run to date in the Petra Organisation/Courts Pee Wee Schools Football Competition.
The West La Penitence-based team have so far managed to put away all before them with consumate ease until their semi-final matchup against nemesis East La Penitence, who they defeated on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time failed to break a nil-all deadlock.
That was their toughest game to date and Kaieteur Sport caught up with Teacher Mark Alleyne during a practice ssession that was being conducted on the school ground yesterday for comments relating to their chances of winning the title and keeping their unbeaten streak alive.
According to Alleyne, despite the favourite tag, they are not taking their opponents lightly and have been working assidiously to remedy most of the weak areas that were detected in their lacklustre display against East La Penitence last week.
He pointed out that they’ve been working on strengthening their defensive structure, which according to him became a little exposed, while their passing was uncharacteristically awful, by their standards, and that too they’ve been attending to ahead of Saturday’s championship showdown.
Alleyne, however, was confident that they would win, adding that once the players remain focused and stick to what they’ve learnt over the past week then everything should be fine, referring to victory.
“We have a good chance of winning this tournament and looking at how West Ruimveldt have played to date I believe that if we pass the ball around we will be able to create numerous chances for our strikers to score,” Alleyne opined.
Asked to pinpoint some of the players who he felt could be key to victory, Alleyne mentioned tournament leading goalscorer Bevney Mark, Marcus Wilson, Rayheim Ramsey and Camacy Davis as those whose performances will be crucial to their chances of lifting the coveted title.
Alleyne urged all teachers, football fans and more importantly parents to come out at the Banks DIH ground to witness the future stars of the sport exhibit their raw talent.
Admission is free.
