Dear Sports Editor,
I saw a letter in the Stabroek Edition of November 06 from a gentleman who says he is a teacher at the Mabaruma Secondary School.
His letter deals with the fielding of swimmers from only Moruca for the National Schools’ Championships. The writer then goes on to take us through the whole gamut of travelling and other expenses for these athletes, hence his argument that Region 1 cannot only select the Regional swim team from Moruca.
I offer the following:
1. These expenses are catered for in the Budget of the Regional Education Department;
2. The reason for running off inter schools and zones is to select your best athletes in the specific disciplines;
3. If Moruca boasts the best swimmers in the Region then, by all means that is how the team should be comprised. Moruca may not have the athletes to do competitive times in the 100m or 200m in the Track events but they could do great times in the aquatic events;
4. Yes, there are others in the Region who could swim, I can swim but I am not competitive material for bringing home the Gold;
The records of the achievements of past teams are all documented.
Also, Region 1 is comprised of 2 Sub Regions not 3 as the writer states. Due to the areas, Moruca, Matarkai and Mabaruma being so widely dispersed, the Administration of the areas had to be sub divided. I do hope that the teacher who wrote the letter will correct this so his students could be properly informed.
I take this opportunity to wish the entire Region 1 team the best in their respective competitions. Support each other, be you from Moruca, Mabaruma or Matthews Ridge. Do your Region proud!
I am,
Born and bred in Region 1.
