The Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club (HOMFC) of Berbice on Saturday last presented the winner and outstanding individual players with their accolades following the recently concluded Inter Ward Football tournament at a specially arranged presentation ceremony held at the All Saints Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam.
Preceding the presentation ceremony were two exhibition matches, an Under-15 encounter and a senior game, both involving North New Amsterdam/East Canje against South/Central New Amsterdam.
The eight team competition, which concluded last Saturday, was won by North New Amsterdam 3-2 on penalty kicks over Central New Amsterdam in the final after the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
East Canje placed third, gaining a walk over from South New Amsterdam. The other teams that participated in the competition were Fyrish/Lower Corentyne, Manchester/Central Corentyne, Rose Hall Town and the Joint Services.
The winning North New Amsterdam team received the Kurt Alphonso Trophy and $70,000 while Central New Amsterdam received $45,000 and trophy. East Canje received $35,000 and trophy for placing third.
The MVP was Steffon DeFlorimonte of North, while Kevin Joseph of Central and Delroy Ferdinand of North netted four goals each and were the joint top goal scorers. The best goalkeeper on show was Dirk Henry of North; prizes were presented compliments of Kurt Alphonso and family.
At the presentation ceremony, which was chaired by former national Ike Bowry, the organisers again reiterated their disappointment in both the BFA and the GFF for their inaction. They stated that their main aim is to get football played in all spheres and forms again in the Ancient County. Coordinator Neil Humphrey did not hide his disappointment in both organisations. He also chided some of the players who claimed that they want to play football but are not turning up for matches. He cited South New Amsterdam who failed to show up for their semifinal game, thus being dumped from the competition.
Former national player Sherwin Forde also expressed his frustration with what is happening with football in Berbice and Guyana. Forde, the younger brother of former national star Adrian ‘Sugar Foot’ Forde, echoed sentiments made earlier by other former national players.
He said that the HOMFC is in the business of football development while noting that they are not in a fight with anyone, but when public funds are involved persons should be accountable.
Forde stated that the HOMFC will continue to do what they do best and that is organising football related activities.
“As former national players we feel saddened with the state of the administration and playing of the game today. Too much fighting and bantering and not much happening,” stressed Forde.
He stated that the HOMFC will continue to organise activities at the junior and seniors levels including female competitions. An Under-15 tournament is slated for this Saturday involving teams throughout Berbice at the All Saints, Scott’s Church ground.
The organisation in conjunction with the Hope Foundation is presently conducting the second annual Wilber Hope Inter Secondary School football tournament. (Samuel Whyte)
