Paramaribo – A Guyanese national sentenced to a long-term jail sentence in Suriname broke out of a local police station Tuesday, authorities here confirmed.
Bhojnarine Persaud alias “Fine Boy’ was among three criminals who escaped from the Santodorp police lock-ups after they cut the iron bars in their cell.
Just recently, Persaud was sentenced to a 12-year jail term for sea piracy in Surinamese waters. According to a police bulletin around 20.15 pm Tuesday evening police officers noticed that three inmates, including Persaud, were not in their holding cells and raised an alarm. A subsequent search in the area proved futile since the culprits had made good their escape.
By press time yesterday, the police confirmed that Persaud and convicted thief Rafael Kromohardjo had been arrested. The third escapee is still at large. He was charged with arson and was awaiting sentencing when he dashed out of prison Tuesday evening.
Authorities also confirmed yesterday, that earlier that day Suriname’s most wanted fugitive and convicted murder, Earl “Kabouter” Morgenstond, was arrested by officers of the Arrest Squad. Acting on a tip from society he was nabbed at his family home in the district of Wanica. Morgenstond was sentenced to 14 years in prison for killing a 65-year-old man when he snatched the victim’s gold chain in a bar.
He escaped on April 29 earlier this year during a visit to the doctor. On Monday the Suriname Police Force announced a new policy in which tips from society which lead to the arrest of fugitives will be awarded with 5000 Surinamese dollars (US$ 1500).
