Though they are yet to singularly win a National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships title, East Georgetown, District 12, remain hopeful that this year could be the one to change that fact, if their tactics go according to plan.
East Georgetown last won a National Schools’ Championships title in 1979 when Georgetown was one team; Georgetown now competes as three separate Districts and Rawle Duke, the Team Manager of East Georgetown, believes tactics is his key to success.
“Well to be honest, we are not as strong as usual in track and field.
We are trying to focus on the Cycling and Teachers competitions to see if we can win overall,” Duke said, alluding to the fact that his District will be engaged in a tactical battle this year.
“If we place highly in the Track and Field and Swimming competitions and win the Cycling and Teachers contests, we could win overall. We are approaching this tactically as a team,” he stated, adding that he knows the strengths and weaknesses of his team.
To win the overall title of the National Schools’ Championships, teams must either win or placed highly in the four competitions, namely the teachers, cycling, swimming and track and field competitions. The 2013 Championships is billed for the National Stadium, November 20-22 with November 19 set aside for Swimming at Castellani Pool.
“Our team may not be as strong as North Georgetown (defending overall Champions) or Upper Demerara (defending track and field champs), but we are going to make the most of it; we have some good young athletes,” Duke told this newspaper yesterday.
According to the District 12 Sports Representative, some of his young charges did well last year and are back on his team for the 2013 competition. “Most of them are females, and most of them will compete in the field events,” was all Duke would reveal.
Duke reiterated his confidence in winning the Teachers’ Championships when he said that “we have some quality teachers for the Teachers’ Championships; I am keeping my fingers crossed. We are competing; we are not just going to sports,” he said.
For the past 33 years, two Districts have dominated Schools’ Championships; North Georgetown and Upper Demerara River have transformed the nationwide battle into a dual contest. They have combined for a total of 26 victories, shutting out every other District in the New Millennium, but East Georgetown plan to somehow change that this year.
