Slingerz Football Club (SFC) can finally boast that they are the ‘Best of the West’ when the still relatively new club finished undefeated in the Stag Beer sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) First Division League.
The side, who many believe could be the club to topple Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United for the ‘best club Capo’, capped the league with a 3–0 win over Seawall Football Club on Monday last at the Den Amstel Ground.
Vurlon Mills (7th), Dwayne Jacobs (52nd) and Quason McAualey (60th) were the goal scorers for SFC who walked away with the tournament’s $500,000 first place prize.
Witnessed by a large football crazed crowed, it was hard to tell that Slingerz had already bagged the league, with the club playing a determined brand of football, much to the delight of their fans.
Mills and Jacobs had threatened Seawall FC’s goal in the opening minutes but a goal mouth fumble caused the eventual losers defence to regroup after that lapse.
However, the champions would not be kept at bay for long with Jacobs working his magic down the right flank, using a few step-over dribble to get past two defenders before squaring a perfect pass to Mills whose thunderous right footed volley gave Seawall FC custodian no chance as he attempted to put gloves on ball.
Not many chances were created by Seawall and the few were thwarted by the Charles Pollard coached side’s defense.
In the second half, Slingerz pressed their opponents defence at every given opportunity. Jacobs once again using his speed and superior ball control eased his way into the attacking third before easily tucking the ball into the back of the nets to double the advantage.
Eight minutes later, McAualey found himself one on one with a defender and won the confrontation with some nimble footwork, releasing a left footed rocket of a shot that left the keeper frozen on his goal-line, Slingerz 3 Seawall 0.
Twelve teams contested the League – Slingerz FC, De Kinderen and Jetty Football Clubs, Uitvlugt, Eagles, Stewartville, Beavers, Young Achievers, Seawall United, Wales, Den Amstel and Bagotville.
Since its formation earlier in the year, Slingerz FC has been the most talked about club in Guyana. Their inaugural tournament triumph was the West Demerara Stag Beer Cup but since then failed to get past Guyana’s #1 team Alpha United in two consecutive finals.
