– teams to battle Nov. 9 – 10 at Skeldon
The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) in collaboration with Rollers Old Boys, founder members of Rollers Volleyball Club of New Amsterdam will be hosting the inaugural Rollers Old Boys Champion of Champions Volleyball competition for teams in Berbice on November 9 – 10 at the Skeldon Back Centre Ground, Upper Corentyne.
According to the organisers, a Lien trophy will be up for grabs and the competition is being held in Skeldon in an effort to expose players in this village of Berbice to competitive volleyball.
Mr. Clifton Phillips (right) hands over trophies to BVA President Gregory Rambarran in the presence of Rollers Volleyball Club President, Tony Rambarran.
Former Sports organiser of Banks DIH Limited, the late John Nestor, who was the first Manager of a Guyana Volleyball team, is quoted as saying that “Skeldon is the birthplace of Volleyball in Guyana and the first representative team from these shores consisted of mostly players from Skeldon”.
Volleyball, the organisers have stated is played on the Upper Corentyne but only at a recreational level; the last time a Skeldon team participated in a BVA competition was back in 2000.
Recently, Mr. Clifton Phillips, who residing on the Upper Corentyne, the founder/captain of the original Rollers Volleyball Club, presented a quantity of trophies and medals to the BVA on behalf of Evan Chee, Sydney Thorne, Derwin Kendall, Gavin Dhaness, Walter Bascom, Bhadree ‘Chas’ Chee, John Gajadhar and himself, the founder members of that club.
In the mid 1970s, Clifton Philips aka ‘Chinee’ became the national setter while Evan Chee became the first Berbician to represent Guyana at the Under-19 level, Walter Bascom became the Captain of the National Team in the 1980s.
On the first day of the competition (Nov. 9) identifying talent in the Upper Corentyne will be the primary focus while the top teams in the Ancient County will face off on day two, Nov. 10 to determine the Champion of Champions.
The winner will have the first hold on the lien trophy along with medals while the second and third place teams will also receive trophies and medals. The Best Spiker, Best Setter and MVP will all be rewarded.
Meanwhile, the BVA will be making arrangements to facilitate transportation for teams that will be coming from West Berbice, Canje, New Amsterdam and Lower Corentyne areas to the competition venue. For more details, contact can be made with BVA Secretary Levi Nedd on tel # 641 9592.
