– inaugural ‘Super Sevens’ sizzles
By Edison Jefford
Top Georgetown clubs, Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters and Colts ‘A’ are on a collision course in the inaugural Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA)-sanctioned Yolo Entertainment ‘Super Sevens’ Basketball competition.
With only seven players allowed per side, the top-seeded, Pacesetters and Colts ‘A’ team easily dismissed their respective opposition. Knights and Sonic Rebels also qualified for this weekend’s semi-final and final at the Burnham Basketball Court.

Pacesetters guard, Keith ‘Bull’ Tute (#6) goes in the paint against the Eagles Monday night for a right-handed floater in the GABA/Yolo Entertainment ‘Super Sevens’ competition.
49-37 points win against Eagles in one of the best games of the night. Keith ‘Bull’ Tute supported Cummings with nine points in an intense contest. Jorenzo Bethune had 14 points for Eagles.
Pacesetters seven that also included ‘big men’ Jermaine Hamilton and Joslyn Crawford presented a formidable challenge for Eagles with Cummings penetrating the paint at will for easy points and finding Hamilton and Crawford whenever the defence collapsed on him.
Pacesetters led throughout the game with only a brief 6-0 run from Bethune in the second half threatening their stability. But Tute responded for Pacesetters with several late penetrations that regained the momentum and sealed the win.
Colts ‘A’ team struggled offensively early in their game, but so did Buxton Lions, which exonerated Colts ‘A’ from any peril. They eventually won 35-25 in an entertaining contest that brought patrons to their feet with lethal And1 plays.
Shelroy Thomas dropped 21 points for Colts ‘A’ while Quasie Newton scored 12 points for Buxton and Ewart Smith eight points. Newton scored five straight points to put his team up 9-6 early in the game, but a fast break from Thomas within the last three minutes of the first half with the colour ball, worth four points, returned the lead to Colts.
Special rules were instituted for the inaugural novel competition. Newton then entertained with an incisive crossover that left Colts’ Roncecio Kyte on the ground and forced several patrons on the court in loud celebration of the And1 move.
Newton continued to entertain with his skill, but was not adequately supported. Nicko Fraser and Thomas took control of the second half for an 18-15 lead. Colts never looked back implementing their ‘running game’ to come away with the win in the end.
Knights defeated Bishop’s High School Warriors 54-30 with Owan Wlaton scoring 20 points for Knights and Akil Lewis 18 points. Lloyd Bart had 10 points for Knights. Marvin Durant scored 21 of Bishop’s 30 points in the game.
Down 41-46 with eight seconds left in the game, Collis ‘Forty’ Pluck landed a huge three-pointer with the coloured ball worth six points to secure a 47-46 win for Sonic Rebels against Colts’ ‘B’ team, which had dominated the last half of the game.
Pluck had 27 points while Jason Squires scored 12 points for Sonic Rebels. Ruel Ritch scored 16 points for Colts ‘B’ with Jonathan Pooran adding 12 points and Keiron Boyce 10 points. GABA-sanctioned ‘Super Sevens’ concludes this weekend on Burnham Court.
