A man who had confessed to a murder in April, that was committed some 14 years ago when he was 13 years old, and was subsequently charged for the offence at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court and remanded to jail, has hanged himself in the New Amsterdam Prison.
After being “bothered for 14 years”, Joshua Ragabeer, 27, a mechanic of Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, had admitted in April, that on September 9, 1999, he raped and murdered Kiroo, 67, of Lot 6 Blairmont, Number Two Settlement, West Bank Berbice.
He had surrendered to the police at the Blairmont Station, and had given a statement. A file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and after further investigation, the DPP advised that Ragabeer be charged with murder.
There were initially some doubts if the man could have committed the crime due to his age at that time.
He had appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver on September 17, last, and was remanded to jail.
Information on the alleged suicide was sketchy but, according to information, the man and two others were in their cell on Monday evening and had fallen asleep. However, when the others awoke, he was seen hanging by a piece of cloth around his neck.
Investigations are continuing.
