Ansa McAl has boasted of its developmental input in sports and many would have lauded their efforts in the yearly Kashif and Shanghai yearly football extravaganza. The Betterverwagting based company recently broadened their support base when they staged the Mackeson Fight Night from September 21-October 5 last in Berbice, Linden and Georgetown.
Twelve of the country’s best amateur boxers donned gloves and the crowd support was more than commendable with record numbers attending the open air affair. The sponsors had promised the boxers
lucrative prices and yesterday morning those pugilists journeyed to the Betterverwagting offices of the sponsors and received cheques for their hard work.
Mackeson Brand Coordinator, Jamaal Douglas, represented Ansa McAl and extended congratulations to the boxers and their coaches. He said that the event has only been successful because the boxers would have turned in their best performances.
Mr. Douglas admitted that he is not versed in the rules and other aspects of the sport but from what he saw at the Georgetown leg, the bouts were action packed and enjoyable. He said he was heartened by the crowd support and urged the continuance in future cards.
The Ansa McAl representative further hinted that his executive is contemplating making the event an annual affair. The boxers engaged Mr. Douglas in discussions pertaining to their yearly activity and the most suitable time to stage a tournament of this nature. “Thank you all for participating,” said Mr. Douglas even as he promised to ventilate the possibility of the yearly tournament.
The tournament was conducted over three weekends in Berbice, Linden and Georgetown, in open air, and under floodlights. The boxers were delighted with Ansa McAl chivalry and extended their gratitude. Those that participated in the tournament are Stephon Gouveia (HE), Clairmont Gibson, Bert Braithwaite, Aquency Harvey, Eon Bancroft, Ron Smith and Trevon King (GDF) Marvin Ageday, Kelon King (FYF), Anandram Dharamra and Kevin Rodney.
