Kisean Azore was yesterday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the unlawful killing of his childhood associate Kurtland Kendall.
Azore, 30, of Lot 79 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, was initially indicted for the murder of Kendall, which took place on March 18, 2008. He subsequently pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on October 14, 2013.
The matter was before Justice Diana Insanally at the Supreme Court. Azore was represented by Attorney-at-Law Mark Waldron.
The accused initially faced 20 years in jail for the offence.
However, based on certain sentencing guidelines, the Judge deducted 10 years from the sentence after taking into consideration a probation report which was admitted into evidence on behalf of the accused, the time he spent behind bars pending the outcome of the trial, and the fact that the accused pleaded guilty to lesser charge, saving the court’s time.
According to the history of the case, the incident stemmed from an old grievance between Kendall and Azore.
The victim was reportedly stabbed several times in his back at a popular hangout spot on Joseph Pollydore Street. Newspaper reports indicated that Kendall was purchasing fish and chips when Azore entered the bar and they engaged in a heated argument.
Azore left the bar and returned, armed with knife and an ice pick. He subsequently stabbed Kendall, who later succumbed to his injuries.
