Education official pleased with preparation to date
The Kashif and Shanghai Organisation will be holding a coaching seminar for the 24 schools involved in this year’s Chico Kashif and Shanghai Schools Football tournament set to start on December 8. The seminar is fixed for next week Wednesday and Thursday.
The principals of that organisation, Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, told the media yesterday that they had a meeting with Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam, to discuss issues in relation to the tournament.
One such issue was the staging of a coaching seminar for the respective coaches of the teams involved. On the encouragement of Mr. Sam, Physical Education Teachers will also be allowed to participate.
The duo disclosed that they have invited Jamaal Shabaaz, former Golden Jaguars Head Coach, now coaching the senior team in his native Trinidad and Tobago, to headline the resource personnel. He will be ably assisted by Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover, also a national Coach and currently in charge of leading club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, and Ivan Persaud. Certificates of participation will be presented to the participants.
Mr. Sam welcomed the initiatives discussed, offering several suggestions and noted that it could only augur well for the development of the sport in schools as they go forward.
Mr. Major took the opportunity to reinforce that no actual cash will be paid to the players in an attempt to clear any misconception of cash rewards being given to the school aged players. He informed that the respective prize monies will go to projects at the respective schools, while the players will get vouchers to assist with educational materials and or sports gear.
Major and Muhammad explained that the prizes are: $1.2M, $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000 for the top four teams. They informed that 75% of those monies will go to a project at the respective schools, while the remaining 25% will go in the form of gift vouchers, redeemable as several stores around the city, to the players for school supplies and or sports gear.
The matches will commence at 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs in the preliminary phase, while in the later stage, games will be played from 16:00hrs and 18:00hrs. The final is set for January 1, 2014. Transportation will be provided by the organisors to take the players home after the games.
