While preparations for the Annual General Meeting of the longstanding Guyana Public Service Cooperative Credit Union (GPSCCU) are currently ongoing, the call is being made for inactive members to join in the activities.
The meeting is scheduled to be held at the Union’s Thomas Lands building on November 10.
According to current members of the organisation, it is imperative that all members attend the meeting so as to participate in the making of decisions that affect the membership base as a whole.
They said that attendance at the meeting will not only allow for informed decisions to be made; but will also provide a platform where misconceptions are cleared and members are given the opportunity to become au fait with the recent developments in the union.
“They could be able to make contributions during the passing of motions and have answers for questions of any issue that is bothering them,” Audrey Kellman, member of the Credit Union related to Kaieteur News.
Rosaline Stewart, also GPSCCU member for close to a decade said that not only will the meeting encompass standard AGM material but will also include a session, rendered as a training programme, which will provide details of ongoing issues affecting the Union.
The Annual Report and Audited Accounts for the period 2009-10 will also be under consideration.
Most important though will be the election for members making up both the 12-member Management Committee and three-member Supervisory Committee.
According to Kellman, there are currently four vacancies within the Management Committee. She said that the vacancies open the window for any member, who so desires, to join the team. While the opportunity is open to new members, Kellman said that the option of reelecting old members of the Management Committee also exists.
“Either four new persons take the stand or four existing members of the Management Committee are reelected,” she said.
Also requiring votes will be the election for persons to take the posts of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Supervisory Committee.
It was noted that it is especially important for the thousands of members who are currently part of the Credit Union to attend the AGM; as all final decisions regarding who will take the lead in carrying out the organisation’s mandate for the next two years are dependent on votes received from the elections.
“The end results of the elections depend on the persons on the ground, the members who vote at the meeting. That is why we are asking persons to come out and vote,” Kellman posited.
The mission of the decades old GPSCCU remains to promote thrift among its members, to educate them in cooperative principles and effective management of the affairs of the society and to create a source of credit available to its members.
