United Bike Shop/Mango Seed Restaurant 70 Mile Road Race …
Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) cyclist Alonzo Greaves for the 22nd time this year took the top podium spot when he eased to victory in the inaugural United Bike Shop (Grove EBD) and Mango Seed Restaurant (USA) sponsored 70-mile Road Race yesterday.
Organised by the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club (CWCC), the race saw all starters pedaling off on Homestretch Avenue in the City, proceeding to various points on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before
returning to Grove on the East Bank for the finish.
Greaves, who placed second on Sunday to club-mate Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams in the Troy Humphrey Memorial feature event at the Sewall Bandstand, would not tolerate and second best place this time around as he completed the 70-mile course in Two Hours 44 Minutes 55.03 Seconds, taking three prime prizes along the way.
In an exciting sprint home, Greaves outdid Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey, Orville ‘Shades’ Hinds and Geron Williams to take the top prize of one GIANT Racing Cycle frame.
Akeem Wilkinson and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay closed out the top six positions which saw the respective riders receiving vouchers to shop at United Bike Shop.
Albert Philander, Geron Williams and Walter Grant-Stuart each won two prime prizes with one each to Mc Kay, Paul De Nobrega, Eric Sankar, Hinds, Jeffrey and Shaquille Agard.
Michael Anthony of Team Coco’s emerged as the top junior rider and was presented with a pair of FULCRUM Racing Wheels for his effort. Shaquille Agard was second with Hamza Eastman, third.
Naomi Singh was once again unbeatable in the female contest winning easily ahead of Tashwanna Doris.
Junior Niles (Team Coco’s) proved again that he was the best among the veterans on the day, winning in One Hour 47 Minutes 37 Seconds from Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson and Talim Shaw in that order.
Ozia Macullay topped his peers in the mountain bike race, along with the veterans and females they turned back at Splashmin’s Resort before returning for the finish at Grove, while the seniors and juniors turned back further up at Dora. Macullay’s winning time was the same as Niles as he completed the distance way ahead of the second and third placed Stephano Husbands and Julio Melville.
There were also some exciting sprint races for the BMX riders.
Horace Burrowes, owner of United Bike Shop in remarks after the event, extended gratitude to CWCC, National Coach Hassan Mohamed and his team, for combining efforts to bring off the race even though the notice was short.
Burrowes, who started his cycling career at CWCC before migrating to the USA, said that they would be doing the event again next year and will make it even bigger. He informed the gathering that he has come from a family that has a rich tradition in cycling. (Franklin Wilson)
