DEAR EDITOR,
A report in your newspaper (dated 27th October, 2013), entitled “New GECOM Commissioner was allegedly fingered in vote manipulation”, has generated great grief and embarrassment at the Guyana Elections Commission. I cannot understand why the Kaieteur News would recklessly publish such reprehensible falsehood.
I have been directed to advise you that Commissioner Mangar never was a computer programmer at GECOM. Further, in 2006, Commissioner Mangar had no involvement whatsoever, in any way shape or form, with GECOM.
I should mention that I have researched the Minutes of GECOM’s Statutory Meetings prior to my arrival at the Commission in September of 2001. There is no documentation relative to any role played by Mr. Mangar to manipulate votes. Moreover, I have spoken to a former Commissioner and Chairman who were integrally involved in GECOM’s activities during the 2001 electoral period. Again, nothing could be recalled pertaining to an attempted subversion of any electoral process within GECOM.
I really do believe that GECOM, in general, and Mr. Mangar, in particular, should be offered an unreserved apology. GECOM, as an important institution, should not be besmirched and its Commissioners should not have to be subjected to trials by gossip.
Dr. R.S. Surujbally, A.A.
Chairman
Guyana Elections Commission
