– Opposition questions why
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, is slated, this Thursday, to provide answers in the National Assembly on a series of questions based on salaries paid to Members of the Judiciary.
Those questions were posed by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s Shadow Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams.
His questions revealed that the Chancellor and the Chief Justice (CJ) are the only ones in the Judiciary that benefit from tax free dollars.
Williams, when contacted yesterday, declined to state whether the questions he posed were born out of concerns reflected by Members of the Judiciary or were of his individual concern.
The questions posed by the Member of Parliament ranged, in content, from inquiries about the last revision of salaries and emoluments of Members of the Judiciary to the “discriminating” payment of tax fee dollars to members of the Judiciary.
Williams asked, “Could the Honourable Minister inform the National Assembly of the date of the last revision of salaries and emoluments of Members of the Judiciary?”
He questioned as well if Government intends to revise the salaries and emoluments of Members of the Judiciary before the end of 2013?
Williams also wants Nandlall to state if the Government considers it a discriminatory act against the majority of the Members of the Judiciary to only pay the Chancellor of the Judiciary and Chief Justice tax-free salaries.
Under a heading—”Tax free salaries for all Members of the Judiciary,” Williams asked, “Could the Honourable Minister inform the National Assembly if the Government will make salaries for all Members of the Judiciary tax-free?”
Members of the Judiciary include the support staff in the Appeal Court, Judges, and secretaries to Judges, the Chief Justice and the Chancellor of the Judiciary.
Williams didn’t want to divulge information as to whether he was asked by Members of the Judiciary to raise those questions. What he did say however, is that the Chancellor “is on record as asking for a review of Salaries.
