– public involvement essential to ensure safety, welfare of children
The Child Care and Protection Agency, (CCPA) has heightened its campaign to protect vulnerable, abused and neglected children.
Director of the CCPA, Ms Ann Greene, says that the agency is sending a “strong message” to parents and guardians, who are in the habit of leaving their children unattended.
“Parents have the responsibility of caring and protecting their children and not leaving them unsupervised or at risk. Parents must ensure that they leave their children in the care of accountable persons. Failing to do so, parents or guardians can face the necessary consequences, and they will be prosecuted. “
Ms Greene lauds those persons, who are willing to set an example by reporting cases of neglect and child abuse.
“I wish to commend persons, who have stepped up and reported such instances to the agency because the public has a major role to play in assuring the safety of Guyana’s children. If people do not report to us we have no other way of knowing, when a child is in danger.”
The CCPA Director reiterates that the reports made to the agency are confidential.
“All reports to the agency are confidential, the informant can remain anonymous…what is important is that they provide the agency with the name and location of the child or children in danger.”
Recently children rescued from unsafe domestic circumstances by officials of CCPA included a two-year-old, who was left alone at a Charlotte Street house for several hours.
A newborn was taken into state care after his American mother appeared unfit to care for him.
Reports can be made to the agency; via CCPA hotline number 227-0979 or persons can make contact with the regional probation officers as well as visit the nearest police station.
The Headquarters of Child Care and Protection Agency is located at Lot 7 Board Street Charlestown.
Reports emanating from the CCPA earlier this year indicate that from a total of 1039 cases of child abuse, 137 are sexual abuse cases with 120 girls being victims.
Cases of neglect include 195 children, while 18 children were completely abandoned. Physically abused children include 69 boys and 72 girls.
The Child Care and Protection Agency was launched on July 29, 2009 under the supervision of then Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, after the legislation was passed in Parliament on January 8, 2009.
The Agency has the power to implement the policies and decisions in relation to the laws governing children: the monitoring of childcare facilities; to intervene in cases where a child is abused or neglected.
