Fly Jamaica donates to McDonald’s World championship ambitions
The tournament was keenly contested but in the end the players of the Enterprise Scrabble Club demonstrated superb acumen and spelt their way to the lion’s share of the prizes when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged the Diwali Class ‘B’ championship at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands yesterday afternoon.
Anand Mohabir led the team and closed off the day with 5 points and a positive spread of 383 to take top honours, while his club mates Kevin Williams and Devraj Deonarine sealed off the podium spots with 4 points and a positive spread of 220 and 4 points and a positive spread of 101 respectively.
The keenly contested tournament also saw Maurice Munru securing 4 points but he failed to ascend the podium after securing the lowest spread of the lot ((50).
Mohabir conceded his second game to Deonarine (60) but easily swept aside his other opponents including Grace Hercules (74), Munru (182), Michael Benjamin (77) Williams (68) and Orlando Michael (52).
Meanwhile, Abigail McDonald was not eligible to participate in the tournament but assisted in the technical area. Shortly after the winners were announced, the scrabble queen took centre stage when she received an airline ticket, compliments of Air Jamaica, to facilitate her return trip to New York, en-route to Prague, Czech Republic, to participate in the World Scrabble Championships from December 4 – 8 next.
This is the second time since dethroning Fred Collins that McDonald is attending the championships; her first sojourn was in Malaysia in 2009. Marketing Representative of Flight Jamaica, Julia Persaud was at the venue to make the presentation and she congratulated McDonald shortly after the gift exchanged hands. Ms Persaud said that her company was delighted to have contributed to the venture even as she wished the scrabble queen a safe journey. She also urged McDonald to make Guyana proud.
McDonald expressed deep gratitude to her benefactor and said that she felt honoured to once again represent Guyana at the championships. She admitted that she encountered many challenges in Malaysia as the standard of competition was extremely high. However, she said that she is now more experienced and feels equipped to take on all comers.
Meanwhile, the executives are beseeching the support of the public as they continue in their fund raising activities to acquire the requisite $680,000 for the world event. They will commence the fundraising with a BBQ and Lime on November 16 at Malteenoes Sports Club. Tickets are $1,000 each and can be obtained from Public Relations Officer, Moen Gafoor (600-9568) or any GASP member.
Persons desirous of supporting the venture may also visit the Malteenoes Sports Pavilion on any Thursday between 18:00hrs-22:00hrs where the members are engaged in practice sessions. Alternatively, interested persons may log on to GASP Facebook page. (Michael Benjamin)
The smiles on the faces of Ms McDonald (L) and Ms Persaud says it all as the travel document exchanges hands
